How Image Metadata Cleaning Works
A transparent look behind the scenes at how our image-processing engine strips hidden data while preserving visual fidelity and color accuracy.
Binary Signature Verification
When an image is submitted, our engine does not simply trust the file extension in the filename. It inspects the actual leading magic bytes (such as FF D8 FF for JPEG or 89 50 4E 47 for PNG) to ensure the file is an authentic, decipherable image format.
Deep Metadata Parsing & AI Analysis
Before any cleaning occurs, the engine performs a pre-scan to catalog existing metadata. It inspects EXIF camera tags, decodes rational GPS arrays into standard latitude/longitude coordinates, reads IPTC creator records, and scans for embedded AI prompt markers (such as Stable Diffusion parameters, ComfyUI workflows, or Midjourney tags).
Raster Re-Encoding & Orientation Bake
Next, the image raster pixel stream is decoded using a trusted native engine. Crucially, the engine applies the EXIF orientation rotation directly to the raw pixels first. Without this step, stripping the orientation tag would cause photos taken with smartphones to appear sideways or upside down!
Preserving Color Profiles (ICC)
Standard basic strippers often strip color profile data blindly, resulting in dull, washed-out images on modern Display P3 and sRGB screens. By default, our Smart Cleaner preserves the embedded ICC color profile so your colors stay accurate while discarding all other tracking metadata.
Independent Verification Inspection
Before returning the file to you, the output buffer is subjected to an independent post-processing inspection. This confirms that 0 remaining EXIF tags, GPS coordinates, or prompt segments are present in the final downloadable file.
